Map 6:12 Iron-making sites in the Weald: for key to numbers see Table 6.3

Table 6.3 Approximate time spans of iron-making sites in the Weald (after Cleere 1975) (solid line indicates certain activity, broken line possible/probable activity)

Table 6.3 shows that iron production was taking place by the end of the first century at many of the coastal sites and at a few places in the High Weald. By the middle of the second century the scale of operations had increased but at the beginning of the third century changes become detectable. The major workings at Bardown and Crowhurst Park appear to have been run down while satellite sites developed around them. In the mid-third century mining seems to have ceased altogether in the Bardown/Holbeanwood complex and in the Battle area around Beauport Park. Therefore, the major production period for this industry, one of the largest operations of its kind in the Roman Empire, probably had a life span of approximately two centuries or a little more.
